A triple j magazine cover depicting chart-topping musician Gotye as a human mirror ball has been named Custom Magazine Cover of the Year in the annual Publishers Australia Excellence Awards.
Published by News Custom Publishing for ABC Magazines, the September 2011 cover of triple j magazine was announced as the winner at a gala event in Sydney.
Inspired by Gotye’s album, Making Mirrors, the cover was designed by the magazine’s art director, Ben Jarvis, and photographed by Cybele Malinowski.
The general manager of News Custom Publishing, David McDonough, said cutting-edge cover concepts were a hallmark of the magazine. “As one of Australia’s leading youth titles, triple j magazine is constantly pushing the boundaries in terms of design. Winning the award affirms this bold approach.”
Liz White, general manager of ABC Publishing, was equally pleased with the win. “ABC Magazines and triple j radio are delighted with this result. The judges especially liked the clever use of mirrors on the cover, and the award recognises a brilliant cover concept which is executed to perfection.”
In addition to winning Custom Magazine Cover of the Year, Ben Jarvis was named runner-up in the Custom Designer of the Year category at the annual awards, which honour the Australian magazine industry’s best and brightest.
A week after triple j magazine’s winning cover went on sale, Melbourne singer-songwriter Gotye’s Making Mirrors was at the top of the ARIA charts, along with its breakthrough single, Somebody That I Used to Know (featuring Kimbra).
triple j magazine is a newsstand title which is published monthly. The next issue is on sale on November 30.
